Abstract

Amid the increasing demand for sustainable urban infrastructure, cities are witnessing a significant shift toward afforestation and the integration of green landscapes. In this regard, the Government of Pakistan, through the Parks and Horticulture Authority, has initiated plantation drives across the city of Lahore using the Miyawaki method of afforestation. This study presents a methodical case study of one such project in a public park known as Jilani Park. Using an exploratory qualitative approach, this research critically evaluates the procedural stages of the Jilani Park project regarding the established Miyawaki methodology. Data collection involved site visits, photographic surveys, and detailed documentation, further supplemented by satellite imagery and an extensive review of relevant literature. The findings reveal substantial divergences from the fundamental principles of the Miyawaki technique, notably regarding species selection, planting configurations, and ecological strategy. The evaluation shows that the forest, though designated as a Miyawaki forest, more accurately parallels the traits of a controlled urban forest. The study concludes by promoting stronger compliance with ecological authenticity in future implementations of such forests and emphasizes the necessity for a region-specific command of PNV in Lahore. It also facilitates national-level documentation and assessment of similar projects to guarantee environmental integrity.
